Indian manufacturers Tata Motors and Mahindra reported strong sales performance during September 2026, reflecting a broader surge in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. The month saw 35,048 electric cars registered across India, marking a 95.4 percent increase compared to the 17,932 units registered in September 2025.
Tata Motors Sales Performance
Tata Motors reached a new monthly record by selling 15,384 electric vehicles in September. This figure represents a 67.38 percent increase compared to the 9,191 units sold in September 2025. The company has now maintained monthly electric vehicle sales above 15,000 units for three consecutive months. Total passenger vehicle sales for the month reached 70,210 units, a 15.27 percent rise from the 60,907 units sold in the same month last year.
Tata Motors holds a dominant 42.2 percent market share in the Indian EV market, with 14,792 EVs registered in September alone. Domestic sales for Tata reached 68,110 units, while exports accounted for 1,400 units. The company continues to expand its electric portfolio, which includes the Punch EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV, and Harrier EV.
Mahindra Sales Performance
Mahindra recorded sales of 64,092 SUVs in September. This result is 13.98 percent higher than the 56,233 units sold in September 2025. For the July-September quarter, the company sold 183,397 passenger vehicles, marking a 26.04 percent increase over the 145,503 units sold during the same period in 2025. The SUV lineup, including the Thar, Scorpio N, Bolero, XUV 3XO, and XUV 7XO, contributed to these results. Electric models such as the XEV 9e, BE 6, and XEV 9S also supported the company's growth.
Mahindra holds a 22.2 percent market share in the Indian EV market, with 7,782 EVs registered in September. Commercial vehicle segments also showed positive momentum. Three-wheeler sales grew by 53 percent to 16,343 units. Light commercial vehicles under 2 tons saw a 30 percent increase, while those above 2 tons grew by 18 percent. The company sold 30,420 four-wheeled commercial vehicles in September.
MG Motor also made significant strides, securing a 15 percent market share with 5,242 EVs registered in September. Strong demand for SUVs and electric models remains the primary driver for both manufacturers.
The Indian EV market's rapid growth is further evidenced by the increasing presence of brands like MG and VinFast, making the market more competitive. The expansion of production capacity and the introduction of new models are expected to accelerate this growth trend, potentially impacting the Nepalese EV market as well.
