Hyundai has confirmed Bayon as the name of its upcoming compact SUV for the Indian market, ending weeks of speculation around the test mules seen with heavy camouflage and "BRING IT ON" messaging. The name is inspired by Bayonne, a city in France's Basque region, reflecting the SUV's character and global design philosophy. The company is pitching Bayon as a fresh take on "intelligent" and intuitive mobility, with more details promised in the coming weeks.

Where Bayon Would Sit For Nepali Buyers

Bayon is being positioned between the Venue and Creta in India. In Nepal, Hyundai already sells Venue across multiple variants, and Creta (petrol) across multiple variants. That means Bayon, if brought here, would likely sit in the space above the higher Venue trims and below the entry Creta, targeting buyers who find Venue a bit tight but don't want to stretch to Creta money.

Today, Hyundai Nepal's compact and midsize options look like this:

Hyundai Bayon

  • Hyundai Venue (petrol)
  • Hyundai Creta (petrol)
  • Hyundai Creta EV: The distributor has not announced a price for this variant
  • Hyundai Kona: The distributor has not announced a price for this variant
  • Hyundai Aura: The distributor has not announced a price for this variant

A future Bayon would naturally speak to buyers cross-shopping the top Venue SX 1.2 2024 and the entry Creta E 2023, giving Hyundai a clearer ladder of SUVs.

What Hyundai Has Shown So Far

Hyundai Motor India has released the first official design sketches of the upcoming Hyundai Bayon, providing the clearest official preview yet of Bayon’s exterior design while also giving us the first look at its cabin. The India-spec Bayon has been seen with an upright stance and a traditional SUV silhouette, featuring flared wheel arches, dual-tone alloy wheels, roof rails, and a sloping rear windscreen. Its proportions look more SUV-like than the Bayon sold in Europe, matching the preference in India and Nepal for "proper" SUVs over crossovers.

Hyundai has released fresh teasers of the Bayon, revealing its front lighting, tail lamps, and alloy wheel design. The front teaser highlights a slim horizontal white light strip paired with a broader, vertically oriented outer element. A prominent bonnet crease is visible above the lighting assembly. At the rear, slim red lighting elements extend towards the outer corners, meeting a vertical section. A black trim panel runs across the tailgate, visually linking the lamps.

The wheel teaser reveals a distinctive geometric alloy design with machined silver surfaces and black recesses. The 215/55 R17 tyres are framed by substantial black wheel-arch cladding, and a circular parking sensor is visible near the front wheel arch.

Design highlights spotted on the test cars include:

  • Split headlamps with L-shaped LED daytime running lights
  • Rectangular air intake
  • Rear LED tail lamps potentially connected by an LED light bar
  • Upright rear windscreen with a roof spoiler

The exterior sketch reveals a wide and upright front fascia dominated by a distinctive lighting signature. Hyundai calls this the ‘H-Edge’ lighting treatment, with a horizontal light element extending across the front and prominent vertical elements towards either end. A sculpted bonnet with pronounced creases adds visual muscle, while the front fenders appear significantly flared.

Inside, Bayon is expected to use a dual-tone interior layout with a curved dual-screen setup for the instrument cluster and infotainment, along with Hyundai's newer two-tone steering wheel and circular door handles. Expected kit includes a 360-degree camera, sunroof, connected features, and ADAS on higher variants. The first official sketch of Bayon's cabin shows a large display area dominating the dashboard, with the infotainment screen positioned prominently towards the centre. The dashboard itself appears to have a layered and horizontal layout.

Hyundai has built Bayon around its 'Art of Steel' design philosophy. Simon Loasby, Senior Vice President and Head of the Hyundai Design Center, emphasized the goal of creating an Intelligent Utility Vehicle that combines thoughtful design with smart technology to suit modern urban lifestyles.

Engines: What This Could Mean For Fuel Choices In Nepal

Hyundai has not officially confirmed mechanical details, but Bayon for India is widely expected to use petrol engines, including a likely 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol option. A factory-fitted CNG variant is also on the cards. Bayon's length is expected to be over 4 meters, and it may feature manual and CVT gearbox options.

If the same powertrains are used for exports, Nepal could eventually see:

  • A 1.5-litre petrol Bayon sitting close to current Creta 1.5 petrol variants
  • A CNG version as a niche option, though CNG infrastructure and past import patterns make that less certain here than in India

India Launch Timing And Nepal Angle

Hyundai has made Bayon official for India and linked its new midsize SUV to the 2026 festive season, with multiple Indian sources pointing to an October 2026 window for market launch. Bookings for Hyundai Bayon have opened in India, giving buyers their first opportunity to reserve the new model ahead of its expected festive-season launch. That keeps India as the first focus market.

There is no formal Nepal launch confirmation yet. Hyundai's practice of sourcing many models for Nepal from its Indian plants means Bayon is a realistic future candidate, but timing, variants, and local pricing remain unannounced. For now, Nepali buyers can treat Bayon as an upcoming India SUV that will likely influence future choices and pricing between Venue and Creta here.

Verdict: Bayon is a confirmed new Hyundai SUV for India that neatly fills the gap between Venue and Creta, and while Nepal's importer has not announced plans yet, it is a model Nepali buyers should watch if they are eyeing the compact SUV band in the next few years.
