Toyota is preparing a fully electric Corolla, adding a battery-powered version to one of the world’s best-selling car nameplates. The Corolla has sold more than 57 million units globally since 1966.
A new generation is being developed with petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and EV powertrains. Toyota first previewed the model in concept form at the Japan Mobility Show last year.
What to expect
The updated Corolla is expected to retain the TNGA-C architecture, with major changes to support different powertrains. Its body-style choices could include a sedan, hatchback, crossover and performance-focused GR variant.
The EV could use single- or dual-motor layouts and offer at least 250 miles, or around 400 km, of range. A new 1.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid system is expected to produce about 134 horsepower and improve efficiency by 10% to 20% over the current system.
A plug-in hybrid with a larger battery is also under development. The global debut is expected in 2027, as a 2028 model-year vehicle. Petrol pricing is estimated at around $25,000, hybrid pricing at around $27,000, and EV and plug-in hybrid versions in the $30,000 range.
