MG Hector Tomahawk PHEV could spotlight Toyota’s hybrid push in Nepal

JSW MG Motor India has introduced the Hector Tomahawk PHEV, using a 1.5‑litre petrol engine, single electric motor and a 20.5 kWh battery pack that can be charged from an external source as well as through regenerative braking. With a fully charged battery, a plug‑in hybrid like this can cover a much larger part of a trip on electric power than a conventional strong hybrid.

In Nepal, MG already sells the MG Hector petrol at Rs 64.99 lakh – Rs 78.25 lakh across five variants, from the Shine (MT) at Rs 64.99 lakh up to the Sharp (CVT) at Rs 78.25 lakh. The Hector sits in the same broad price band as MG's electrified offerings such as the MG MGS6 EV at Rs 71.99 lakh, the MG ZS EV at Rs 48.49 lakh – Rs 71.99 lakh, and the MG IM6 at Rs 81.99 lakh, with the MG MGS5 EV at Rs 43.99 lakh – Rs 55.99 lakh and MG Astor at Rs 48.49 lakh offering more affordable options. A future Hector Tomahawk‑style PHEV for Nepal would likely slot near the top of this band, targeting buyers who want SUV space with lower fuel use.

Toyota, for its part, is aggressively promoting its self‑charging strong‑hybrid technology in India, highlighting models like the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova Hycross, Camry and Vellfire and the message that owners do not need to plug in. For Nepali buyers watching India, the contrast is clear: plug‑in hybrids demand charging access but maximise electric driving, while strong hybrids keep the familiar petrol refuelling routine with simpler ownership. Local distributors for MG and Toyota have not announced any Hector Tomahawk PHEV or new strong‑hybrid launches for Nepal yet, so Nepal pricing and launch timelines remain unconfirmed.
