The Nepal Automobile Importers and Manufacturers Association (NAIMA) has formally asked the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) to extend the registration deadline for vehicles impacted by recent floods and landslides.
Currently, regulations require vehicles to be registered at a transport office within 15 days of clearing customs. However, severe weather in the Jomsom and Beni regions has blocked routes for vehicles arriving via the Korala customs point. This makes it impossible for importers to meet the standard 15-day window.
NAIMA is also urging the department to assist other members facing similar logistical challenges without adding extra administrative or financial costs.
Supply chains remain under pressure. The Korala route has faced disruptions since late September, while the Rasuwagadhi border has been affected since the Bhotekoshi flood on August 26. These delays are hindering the movement of vehicles intended for Dashain deliveries.
Previous flooding has already caused significant damage to the sector. Insurance claims for 1,066 vehicles, including over 500 electric cars, have reached more than Rs 3.07 billion as of September 28.
