Maruti Suzuki is developing a Fronx facelift that is expected to introduce a new in-house strong hybrid powertrain in its compact crossover SUV line-up. The new setup is being targeted for fuel efficiency of over 35 km per litre, which would place it among the most frugal petrol SUVs in the region.
New hybrid powertrain
Current strong hybrids from Maruti Suzuki like the Grand Vitara, Invicto and Victoris use a 1.5-litre Toyota-sourced engine. For the Fronx facelift, Maruti is reported to be working on a more cost-effective in-house hybrid system based on a new 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Z-series petrol engine. This engine is expected to work with an electric motor and battery to deliver high fuel efficiency, with a claimed target above 35 kmpl. Official mileage figures and full technical details are yet to be announced.
The same hybrid system is expected to be rolled out to other mass-market models in future, including the Baleno, the next-generation Swift, Brezza and an upcoming sub-4m MPV.
Safety and features

The Fronx facelift is also expected to gain a significant safety update with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Expected features include:
- Adaptive cruise control
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Front collision warning
- Lane keep assist

These features would bring the compact crossover closer to higher-segment SUVs on active safety.

Design and positioning
On the outside, the Fronx facelift is expected to keep the general look of the current petrol and CNG versions. Key design elements like the split headlamp setup, 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and sporty front and rear bumpers are likely to be carried over with minor tweaks.
Once launched in India, the updated Fronx hybrid will compete with compact SUVs from Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mahindra, Toyota and Kia. For Nepali buyers, the key attraction will be the claimed over-35 kmpl efficiency and added safety tech, if and when this hybrid-spec Fronx is brought here. Nepal launch, pricing and variant details have not been confirmed yet.

Verdict: For value-conscious buyers in markets like Nepal, a Fronx hybrid with real-world efficiency near 35 kmpl and Level 2 ADAS could become one of the most sought-after compact crossovers if the hybrid version is officially introduced here.
