Honda is working to lower its vehicle development costs in India by approximately 20%. The company has entered a partnership with Tata Technologies to achieve this goal and speed up its product creation process.
This strategy aims to reduce the current five-year development cycle by up to 50%. The collaboration will allow Honda to use a broader network of local suppliers and create vehicles tailored for Indian buyers. Honda will keep control over core areas like connectivity, technology, and driver-assistance systems.

This shift follows a decline in Honda's market share in India, which has dropped to about 1.3% from a peak of 7.3% over the last decade. The company currently has a limited presence in the compact SUV segment, where the Honda Elevate is its primary offering.

For context, the Honda Elevate is currently available in Nepal with prices ranging from Rs 62.54 lakh for the SV MT variant to Rs 84.90 lakh for the DT (Dual Tone Color) model. This places the Elevate above the Honda Amaze, which is priced between Rs 46.79 lakh and Rs 57.75 lakh, and in a similar range to the Honda City, which spans from Rs 63 lakh to Rs 103 lakh.

The first model from this partnership is expected to be a sub-4-meter SUV arriving by 2028. A mid-size SUV is planned to follow. Honda is targeting over $9 billion in global cost reductions over the next four years as it updates its product strategy.
