Germany has launched new regulations to simplify how electric vehicle owners sell electricity back to the power grid. The Federal Network Agency introduced the MiSpeL framework on October 1.
This policy covers bidirectional charging and electricity storage. Owners can now store grid power and solar energy in the same battery without losing renewable energy subsidies. The system allows users to charge when electricity is cheap and sell it back when demand and prices rise. Some charges on electricity supplied to the grid will also decrease.
Not every vehicle qualifies for this system. Requirements include:
- Support for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging
- Compatible charging equipment
- Appropriate metering
- A suitable electricity contract
Vehicles with only vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability are excluded. Grid and meter operators have until September 30, 2027, to prepare for these changes, though some may start earlier. Financial returns are not guaranteed. Earnings depend on equipment costs, specific electricity contracts, and how often the vehicle remains connected to the grid.
