The Nepal Automobile Association (NASA Nepal) recently concluded a two-day event titled ‘Policy Dialogue on EV in Nepal: Driving the Future’ at Hotel Tulip in Gwarko, Lalitpur. The program gathered policymakers, government officials, researchers, and industry experts to discuss the current landscape of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.
Discussions covered critical areas including charging infrastructure, battery management, safety standards, and financial incentives. Data presented during the event showed that EVs accounted for approximately 7 percent of new car sales in the last fiscal year, with over 3,800 EVs registered. 45 electric buses and trucks were imported during the same period.
Department of Transport Management officials announced that new regulations are being drafted. These will mandate type approval, motor-battery safety standards, and third-party testing. The government also plans to establish a dedicated unit for safety, research, and quality control.
Participants emphasized that the transition to electric mobility requires a unified approach involving infrastructure, research, and skilled human resources. The event highlighted the need for balanced information regarding EV safety and performance to support sustainable growth in the sector.
