Department of Transport Management sets lower fares for electric buses in Nepal

The Department of Transport Management has officially set lower fare rates for electric buses compared to diesel-powered vehicles on inter-provincial routes. This move establishes a distinct pricing structure for battery-powered public transport across the country.

Under the new schedule, electric bus fares are up to 16 percent cheaper than those for diesel or petrol-powered buses. The department has published these rates for 280 routes nationwide.

Fare Comparison Examples

On the Kathmandu-Attariya-Martadi route, passengers can save significantly by choosing electric services:

  • Regular: Rs 3,132 for electric vs Rs 3,762 for diesel (a saving of Rs 630).
  • Deluxe: Rs 3,759 for electric vs Rs 4,514 for diesel (a saving of Rs 755).
  • Super Deluxe: Rs 4,510 for electric vs Rs 5,417 for diesel (a saving of Rs 907).

Similar savings apply to other major corridors. On the Kathmandu-Pokhara route, regular electric bus fares are set at Rs 652, while diesel buses charge Rs 799. Deluxe electric fares are Rs 783 compared to Rs 940 for diesel, and super deluxe electric fares are Rs 939 against Rs 1,128 for diesel.

On the Kathmandu-Butwal route, regular electric fares are Rs 790, deluxe are Rs 947, and super deluxe are Rs 1,137. Diesel buses on this route charge Rs 948, Rs 1,138, and Rs 1,365 respectively.

These rates apply to inter-provincial routes where electric buses are currently in operation. Passengers are advised to check the official fare lists displayed inside public vehicles for route-specific details.

This new fare structure provides a clear financial incentive for passengers to choose electric public transport over traditional fuel-powered alternatives.
