Mercedes-Benz is testing a prototype of its VLE luxury minivan that appears to use a hybrid powertrain. Recent spy images show the vehicle with a large, open radiator grille, which differs from the closed front end found on the fully electric VLE model.
This test vehicle features two filler flaps on the rear sections, indicating one is for charging and the other is for fuel. An exhaust system is also visible beneath the rear floor. While the manufacturer has not confirmed technical details, industry speculation suggests the van may use a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine similar to the one found in the new Mercedes-Benz CLA.
This hybrid variant is expected to offer lower power output than the electric VLE 300, which produces 276 PS, and the VLE 400, which delivers 415 PS. Despite the change in powertrain, the interior is expected to retain the premium features of the electric version, including the MBUX Superscreen and a folding 31.3-inch 8K rear display.
Official details and a launch timeline have not been announced.
