Chinese vehicle manufacturers are tightening their grip on the world's largest automobile market. Data from the first eight months of 2026 shows that Chinese brands captured 62.67% of passenger-car retail sales in China.
Total retail sales reached approximately 11.7 million units during this period. This volume represents a decline of about 20.8% compared to the same timeframe last year.
New energy vehicles (NEVs) are the primary driver of this shift. These models accounted for 56.9% of total sales through August, with that figure climbing to 65.2% in August alone.
