BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao has taken another step toward launching the Tai 9, a full-size 6-seat plug-in hybrid SUV now listed in China’s vehicle approval catalog.
For Nepali buyers, the key question is whether this larger BYD model will eventually reach India or Nepal through the import chain. That has not been confirmed. For now, the Tai 9 remains a China-market development.
What is new
- The Tai 9 measures 5,270 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width and 1,880 mm in height, with a 3,130 mm wheelbase. - Without roof rails, its height drops to 1,850 mm. - It is listed with a 1.5-liter engine that produces 110 kW of maximum net power. - The SUV uses dual permanent-magnet synchronous motors, with 200 kW at the front and 200 kW at the rear. - Its battery pack is 66.48 kWh, with an all-electric range of 310 kilometers. - The curb weight is 2,865 kg or 2,965 kg, and top speed is 220 km/h.
Why it matters for Nepal
If a model like the Tai 9 later comes to Nepal, it would sit above most mainstream imported SUVs in size. Price would likely follow.
That matters in Nepal because large, battery-heavy plug-in hybrids usually arrive as premium imports. Taxes, shipping and dealer margins can push the final showroom price far beyond the China-market positioning.
For now, no Nepal launch date, distributor announcement or local price has been confirmed.
The Tai 9 also marks the first public mention of BYD’s new DMS platform. Fang Cheng Bao says the brand sold 41,213 vehicles in July, up 190.64% year on year, while its January-July total reached 200,687 units.
The company’s other large models, the Bao 8 and Tai 7, currently define its SUV range. The Tai 9 will become the new flagship once it receives sale approval and then launches in China.
