BYD has introduced its first locally manufactured car in Brazil, the Song Pro Super-Híbrido Flex Fuel plug-in hybrid SUV, built at its new Camacari plant. This marks a significant step in BYD's localization strategy, with the car being co-developed by research and development teams in Brazil and China, tailored specifically for the Brazilian market.
The SUV’s PHEV powertrain can run on petrol, ethanol, and pure electric, with a claimed electric-only range of up to 120 km in the higher GS variant, and 60 km for the GL version. The engine is tuned for Brazil’s flex-fuel norms, able to accept both petrol and high-ethanol blends. This flexibility is crucial as ethanol fuels gain wider adoption.
BYD executives have stated that this Brazil-specific Song Pro DM-i Flex could later be offered in India, where higher-ethanol petrol (E20 and beyond) is becoming standard. Any Indian launch would give BYD a flex-fuel hybrid in a key source market for Nepal.
In Nepal, BYD currently focuses on pure electric models imported mainly from China and India, and there is no announcement of the flex-fuel Song Pro for Nepal. However, if BYD India adopts this hybrid, Nepali buyers could eventually see more diverse BYD powertrain options and potential price benefits from regional production, especially for customers wanting long range with lower fuel costs on cross-country drives.
The Camacari plant, where the Song Pro is manufactured, began production on July 1, 2025, with a planned annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles in its first phase. The factory is expected to produce about 180,000 cars this year, and BYD aims to sell about 200,000 vehicles in Brazil in 2026, with roughly 150,000 of those supplied by the plant.

BYD's sales in Brazil have been robust, with July seeing a doubling to 23,465 vehicles, giving it a 9.1% market share and fourth place. This growth underscores BYD's commitment to becoming Brazil's best-selling car brand by 2030. The company is investing 5.5 billion reais in the Camacari plant, which aligns with its goal to establish Brazil as a regional export hub.
With competition intensifying at home, overseas business is becoming increasingly important for the Shenzhen-based automaker. In March, BYD raised its 2026 overseas sales target to 1.5 million vehicles from 1.3 million. In the first seven months of this year, BYD sold 972,794 vehicles overseas, up 78.49% year-on-year and accounting for 43.67% of its total NEV sales.
