Questions buyers asked

What are the concerns about hydrogen refueling?

People worry that refueling hydrogen vehicles takes longer than charging EVs, and hydrogen pump infrastructure is still limited.

Is the BMW iX5 fully electric?

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is an electric SUV that runs on a hydrogen fuel cell and electric motor instead of a plain battery setup, and it isn't sold in Nepal yet.

Is a hydrogen car better than an EV for Nepal?

A hydrogen car refuels in minutes and offers long range, while battery EVs already have growing charging options in Nepal; since Nepal only has pilot hydrogen research and no public refuelling network yet, battery EVs remain the practical choice today.

What owners actually said

Every line below says which it is. A quote is somebody's own words on the platform named. A summary is ours, drawn from published coverage — and never put inside quote marks.

“Yeah but won’t hydrogen be expensive and people aren’t gonna buy it if it’s expensive. Plus, it’s gonna be hard to find hydrogen pumps even tho it can go over 900miles”

Owner’s own wordsYouTube comment

“Some people are so easily duped. Just look into the real world scenario of refuelling hydrogen. The first one or two people may get a quick fuelling....but the pressure then drops in the tanks. It takes time to build the pressure up again. In the real world some people are waiting longer to just be able to plug in than if they'd charged a BEV. Honestly, hydrogen really is not the way for ground transportation.”

“This is disturbing, not bright future for hydrogen with 700 bar.”

Hydrogen car has finally entered Nepal through KU, but it’s just for research and there is no legal framework yet to register or run hydrogen cars commercially.

Our summary, not a quoteReported by en.nepalkhabar.com

There is still no policy or procedure for treating hydrogen as fuel, issuing number plates, bluebooks or licensing hydrogen refuelling centres in Nepal.

KU’s hydrogen SUV test using locally produced hydrogen shows the technology works here, but scaling it will need government regulations and more infrastructure.

Price, service, resale and roads — here

  • Hydrogen cars in Nepal are presently limited to research projects at Kathmandu University, where a Hyundai hydrogen SUV and a refuelling centre have been introduced with support from Nepal Oil Corporation; there is no commercial market yet.
  • Articles point out that the Nepal government has not formally defined hydrogen as a fuel, so procedures for registering hydrogen cars or approving refuelling centres are not in place.
  • Local coverage emphasizes that hydrogen mobility in Nepal is at an early stage, focused on pilots and policy discussion rather than private sales, and that the BMW iX5 Hydrogen is not yet available in the Nepali market.
  • Discussion around the KU pilot car notes that hydrogen can be produced from water using electricity and that Nepal’s hydropower could be used, but large‑scale production and distribution are still future plans.
  • Green Hydrogen Policy 2080 passed; but hydrogen vehicles lack plates, legal clarity, and infrastructure
  • Hydrogen production cost high now (~USD 5/kg globally), but hopes for reduction by 2030; local electricity cost factors in
  • One hydrogen car (Hyundai Nexo) tested in Kathmandu; price noted (~USD 33,000 for that import)

BMW iX5 Hydrogen pros and cons from owners

Pros — what owners rate

  • Hydrogen technology is seen as innovative and suitable for using Nepal’s surplus hydropower to produce clean fuel.
  • Refuelling a hydrogen SUV in under 5–6 minutes for a 500+ km range is appreciated as more convenient than long EV charging times.
  • The SUV format, similar to the BMW X5, is perceived as appropriate for Nepal’s highways and intercity travel where long range matters.
  • Interest in hydrogen’s long-term potential, especially for heavy loads and mountainous terrain

Cons — problems owners report

  • Hydrogen may be expensive and hard to find pumps for.
  • Real-world refueling times for hydrogen may be longer than charging a BEV.
  • Concerns about safety with high pressure in hydrogen systems.
  • There is currently no clear policy in Nepal for registering, insuring, or issuing number plates and blue books for hydrogen vehicles, which worries potential buyers.
  • Nepal has only a pilot refuelling setup at Kathmandu University, so there is effectively no public hydrogen station network for regular users.
  • Discussion notes that hydrogen cars are still experimental in Nepal, raising concerns about long‑term service, spare parts, and resale value.
  • Some commenters question whether hydrogen is economically viable compared with battery EVs given the cost and complexity of production, storage, and infrastructure.
  • No hydrogen refueling stations; legal and registration challenges
